Leader+ EU
How to build a drytoilet inside a house?

What to do with the nutrient rich products of drytoilet?

The Global Dry Toilet Club of Finland has received a lot of these kinds of questions from Finland as well as the EU region. We decided to summarize the answers in a project that was funded by the EU Leader+ program. The project will last from 1.12.2004 - 31.03.2006 and it will be done in co-operation with Tampere Polytechnic University.

The project consists of three parts:

1. Building demonstration indoor drytoilets in Pirkanmaa region. Modern drytoilet is a functional and hygienic solution to install also inside a house. However there is relatively little information available concerning experienses on drytoilet use. The Global Dry Toilet Club of Finland built, as a part of Leader+ funding, ten demonstration indoor drytoilets during the years 2005 - 2006. The toilets are built in the region of the funders representative Kantri ry:n in Pirkanmaa area (Kangasala, Nokia, Ylöjärvi, Pirkkala, Lempäälä, Vesilahti and Tampere countryside-region). Private houses were selected as the demonstration sites. In these sites the toilet will be in a regular use and in a warm space (Kangasala, Pirkkala, Nokia, Vesilahti, Ylöjärvi and Tampere countryside-region). More about the model targets.

2. Exporting the Finnish drytoilet technology to some EU countries. There is a lot of demand for drytoilets also in the EU region and information is needed on buildings as well as the maintenance. The Global Dry Toilet Club of Finland is building demonstration sites of Finnish drytoilets to Estonia and Latvia. At the same time drytoilet-manuals are translated in to Estonian, Latvian and Spanish languages. More...

3. The maintenance of drytoilets and the guide for the treatment of the waste.
The guide was gathered in co-operation with the city of Tampere, Pirkanmaa Regional Environment Center, Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto Oy and Rahola allotment garden. The guide was in test use in the Rahola allotment garden during the summer 2005 and the finished guide was published in the spring 2006.
